6 Skin Care Ingredients to Avoid When in the Sun

While some skin care ingredients are our allies in the quest for radiant skin, others can be detrimental when coupled with sun exposure. In this blog post, we'll shed light on the skin care ingredients you should avoid when soaking up the sun. If you're going to use any of these ingredients during sun exposure, make sure you are diligent about wearing your UPF 50+ sun visor in the full coverage position. Some of these may be a shocker, so be sure to read on!

  1. Retinoids: A Sun-Sensitive Duo

Retinoids, prized for their ability to combat aging and stimulate collagen production, are best used during your evening skin care routine. These powerful ingredients can increase skin sensitivity to the sun, making your skin more prone to sunburn and irritation. To keep your skin safe, use retinoids at night and don't forget the sunscreen during the day.

  1. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs): Sun Sensitivity Unleashed

AHAs and BHAs are beloved exfoliating ingredients, sloughing away dead skin cells to reveal a radiant complexion. However, they can also make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage. Use these exfoliants with caution and always pair them with UPF sun visors and SPF during the day to shield your skin from harmful UV rays.

  1. Benzoyl Peroxide: Sunburn Alert

Benzoyl peroxide, a trusted acne-fighting ingredient, can increase the skin's sensitivity to sunlight. As you bid acne farewell, remember to cover up with protective hats, clothing and sunscreen to avoid sunburn and unwanted skin reactions.

  1. Hydroquinone: Sun Spots' Nemesis

Hydroquinone is a skin-lightening agent used to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. However, this potent ingredient can cause photosensitivity, making it crucial to use it as directed and strictly avoid sun exposure during treatment.

  1. Essential Oils: Light-Sensitive Companions

Some essential oils, particularly citrus oils like bergamot, lemon, and lime, contain compounds that can cause phototoxic reactions. These reactions can lead to skin irritation and discoloration when exposed to sunlight. If you're using essential oils in your skin care routine, use them in the evening to avoid potential sun sensitivity.

  1. Certain Acne Medications: A Sun Sensible Approach

Certain acne medications, such as isotretinoin (Accutane), can make your skin more susceptible to sunburn. If you're undergoing acne treatment, consult your dermatologist about sun protection measures and suitable skin care products for sun-exposed days.

While skin care is essential for maintaining healthy, radiant skin, it's crucial to be mindful of the ingredients you're using when exposed to the sun. Avoid using retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone, essential oils, and certain acne medications during sun-soaked days. Instead, reserve these potent ingredients for your evening skin care routine, allowing your skin to thrive and stay safe with your UPF 50+ sun visor when you venture into the sun. Embrace the golden rule of sun protection: wear broad-spectrum sunscreen, seek shade, and use protective hats and clothing to ensure your skin enjoys the best of both worlds—glowing health and sun-kissed joy.

Few months ago I got two visors. The large one I wore twice because when there’s a strong wind it does not stay in place. Consequently, can I exchange the large one for this new and more secure visor? I do not mind paying the difference. Please let me know
